The Chester Mystery Plays, which take place every five years in the city, are a 700-year old theatrical legacy based on iconic stories from the Old and New Testaments, as told by the medieval guilds of Chester. This year, The Chester Grosvenor has launched a dedicated city break package for guests for the duration of the plays.
A much-anticipated highlight in the British arts calendar, the Chester Mystery Plays will once again be taking centre stage in the city between 27th June and 14th July, attracting visitors from across the globe. Comprising a local cast of hundreds, as well as numerous support teams, the plays are considered one of the largest community events in the North West. Written by Deborah McAndrew, the plays are presented in one narrative with five Acts, with original music by Matt Baker, directed by Peter Leslie Wild and design by Dawn Allsopp.
On 5th July, a reception will take place at Chester Cathedral, prior to one of the performances. This year, The Chester Grosvenor will be providing refreshments for over 100 guests, including VIPs and local dignitaries. The hotel has also put together a Chester Mystery Plays City Break package, which includes two-courses from La Brasserie’s Early Dining menu, a glass of Sommelier’s choice wine, two tickets to the plays and overnight accommodation.
General Manager of The Chester Grosvenor, Richard Grove, comments: “The Chester Mystery Plays are one of the most unmissable events in Chester’s calendar and we’re delighted to be celebrating their legacy once again. The production of the plays is so important to the local community and we look forward to the vibrancy and energy they will bring to Chester city centre and welcoming guests from near and far.”
