Santa Cruises begin at Cheshire’s ‘Cathedral of the Canals’ and shop is stocked with unusual, specially-sourced gifts

The famous, festive Santa Cruises have got off to a flying start at Cheshire’s Anderton Boat Lift, known as the ‘Cathedral of the Canals’. These magical trips -  a treat for both children and adults - are full of festive family fun with games, songs and stories with Santa. Each child will meet Santa and receive a gift that has been specially picked by him. Places are still places available for families who want to do something different and magical over the festive season. What’s more, the Lift’s shop is sparkling like an Aladdin’s cave with a selection of eye-catching retro toys, children’s books and stocking-fillers.

The Anderton Boat Lift’s festive trips take place every weekend during December up until Christmas Eve as well as on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 December. Boats cast off at 10am, 11am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm. A child’s ticket costs £7.75 and an adult’s £5.75. Pre-booking is highly recommended on 01606 786777 and all those who pre-book can take advantage of a Festive Food Deal in the Lift’s tree-top Coffee Shop.

Additional dates for the Santa Cruises are available to nurseries and school groups. For more information, call 01606 786 777.

In the shop, gifts are hand-picked by the Lift’s experienced buyers, and the aim is to provide gifts not found easily elsewhere. As one of the country’s leading canal attractions, it also stocks presents that would suit anyone who loves waterways and the countryside. The Lift is owned by the Canal & River Trust charity.

There is a large selection of colourful retro toys, including Magic Sets, Marbles, Connect 4 and Mystic 8 Ball. For children who enjoy reading, the tree-top shop sells a range of books, including the Enid Blyton for Adults range of books.  For adults who dream about summer days on the water, there are a range of navigational maps and fictional authors such as Terry Darlington as well as books on walking and boating.

Carly Graham, Duty Manager, Duty Manager, Anderton Boat Lift, said: “At the Lift, Christmas is one of our favourite times of year. Our aim is to provide a magical experience for children and adults on our fun and festive Santa Cruises as well as giving everyone a chance to stock up on unusual Christmas presents in our shop. For those who book in advance, there is also the chance of taking advantage of our Festive Food Deal in the tree-top Coffee Shop – a lovely way to round off the perfect day.”

The Anderton Boat Lift is one of the seven wonders of Britain’s waterways and is an engineering masterpiece, being the world’s first ever successful boat lift. The Lift sits in a spectacular location between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal and is an interesting combination of working historic structure and fun, educational experience. There is a play area on site.
