December fun at Cheshire’ s Anderton Boat Lift thanks to the National Lottery

The Canal & River Trust, the national waterways and wellbeing charity, is offering free treats to National Lottery players at our museums and attractions during December.

The Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Attraction will be giving out free hot drinks for National Lottery players during the weekend of 8-9 December 2018. The attraction is one of hundreds of participating National Lottery-funded visitor attractions across the UK saying ‘thanks’ to people who have raised money for good causes by buying a lottery ticket.

The idea is simple: any visitor who presents a National Lottery ticket or scratchcard on 8-9 December gets a free hot drink for up to 2 adults as well as a free goodie bag in return.

The Canal & River Trust has received over £70million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and to celebrate this we will also be awarding a VIP gift to every 70th lottery ticket holder through the attraction’s door.

The Anderton Boat Lift is the world’s first successful boat lift and a Scheduled Monument (with the same protection status as Stonehenge and Hadrian’s Wall). It was restored in 2002 at a cost of £7m, including a £3.3m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Timothy Turner, General Manager, Anderton Boat Lift said: “Thanks to the money from National Lottery players we’ve been able to improve the waterways for the millions of people who use or visit them every year. Every day, visitors come to the Anderton Boat Lift and are astonished by this feat of Victorian engineering and marvel at its huge and impressive structure. We are enormously grateful to the Heritage Lottery for being a part of the team that rescued the ‘Cathedral of the Canals’, as the Lift is often referred to. We hope as many people as possible come and join us for this special weekend and perhaps combine it with taking one of the Lift’s popular Santa Cruises.

The magical cruises along the River Weaver give children a chance to speak to Santa and take part in story reading and singing. Each child leaves with a present. A child’s ticket costs £8.00 (no charge for under six months old) and an adult ticket is just £6.00. Pre-booking is highly recommended on 01606 786777 or at www.visitchester.digitickets.co.uk. Everyone who pre-book tickets can also take advantage of a Festive Food Deal in the Lift’s tree-top Coffee Shop

Throughout the year, entry to the Anderton Boat Lift site is free. Visitors both young and older can enjoy seeing the Lift, viewing the exhibition about the Lift, playing on the £50,000 bespoke play area and visiting the tree-top Coffee Shop and shop. The only cost is if visitors wish to opt for a boat trip or Santa Cruise.

Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “December is a wonderful time to experience the UK’s rich, diverse and exciting heritage, which has been transformed by more than £7.8bn National Lottery funding since 1994. This is a small gesture of thanks and a way of giving something back to the people who buy tickets.”

For parents looking for a Christmas activity with a difference, Santa will be swapping his sleigh for a boat this Christmas at Cheshire’s Anderton Boat Lift..
